What is a Gobo?

To simplify things, a Gobo is simply an image applied to a circular piece of glass or metal that is inserted into a projector to then shine that design onto a surface. This projected image can be anything you can dream up. You can choose from our stock or we can send you artwork instructions in order to project your own custom gobo.

This can be as simple as wedding initials being projected above a bride & groom or as complex as transforming an exterior of a building into a dreamlike wonderland. Gobo Projections can turn your design into a beautiful projection. We tend to use glass gobos over metal gobos due to the quality of the image.

Why Glass Gobos?

 

Glass gobos are considered higher quality than steel or metal gobos for several reasons:

  1. Precision and Detail: Glass gobos can be produced with much finer detail and higher resolution than steel gobos. This allows for intricate patterns, gradients, and even multi-color designs, which steel gobos cannot achieve due to the limitations of cutting metal. The etching process used in glass gobos can create very delicate lines and intricate shapes.

  2. Color Options: Glass gobos can be made in full color or multi-color designs by layering different colors of glass or using dichroic filters. Steel gobos, on the other hand, are monochromatic (black and white), since they are essentially stencils that block light.

  3. Durability: Glass gobos are often more durable when used in high-temperature environments, such as inside high-wattage lighting fixtures, because they can withstand higher heat without warping. Steel gobos may bend or degrade over time due to repeated exposure to intense heat from lighting fixtures.

  4. Heat Resistance: Glass gobos, especially dichroic or coated glass, are engineered to handle extreme temperatures without changing shape or distorting the projection. Metal gobos are more prone to heat-related issues, which can affect the clarity of the projected image over time.

  5. Visual Clarity: Glass gobos produce sharper and cleaner images because they allow light to pass through the etched or printed areas smoothly. Steel gobos, being physically cut out, can sometimes result in jagged edges or less crisp projections.

  6. Customization: Glass gobos offer greater flexibility in design, including the ability to project photographic images, gradients, and smooth transitions, which are impossible with the cut-out style of steel gobos.
